Associate Chief Librarian, NY Public Library

NYPL is seeking an Associate Chief Librarian who will manage collection development, develop policies and monitor the budget.

Under the general supervision of the Director for Collections and Services, the Associate Chief Librarian, Jean Blackwell Hutson Research and Reference Division (JBH R&R) will:

  • Manage division collection development activities in coordination with NYPL collection strategy, trends in academic and trade (e) book publishing, and Schomburg’s users and existing collection strengths.
  • Coordinate and participate with other management staff in the development and implementation of library policies and procedures, goals, long-term objectives, and planning.
  • Plan and organize activities and supervise personnel for assigned division; conduct regular scheduled meetings with staff.
  • Manage work activities, supervise projects and programs, monitor workflow, review and evaluate work procedures and methods. Ensure cataloging meets library standards.
  • Review donated material and printed matter separated from special formats for inclusion in JBH R&R collection.
  •  Monitor division budget, participate in the forecasting additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Administer contracts and service agreements and evaluate ongoing services provided by vendors.
  • Work closely with Schomburg senior management and NYPL Development staff to identify and secure funding from grants and donors and prepare proposals, applications, and reports.
  • Report annual preservation statistics and monthly statistics for materials added or withdrawn.
  • Monitor stack environment, designate material for special treatment, and maintain preservation materials.
  • Manage shelf and bindery preparation and ensure staff training for materials handling and disaster preparedness.
  • Monitor circulation of collection materials and report outstanding circulation items to security officers for follow up.
  • Manage routine shelf reading/inventory to ensure timely materials delivery.

Qualifications:
  • MLS from an ALA accredited library school.
  • At least seven years of progressively responsible experience in a research library environment; relevant branch library experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of African-American, African and African Diasporan bibliography, resources, and scholarship.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public and preparation services, policies, and procedures. Clear record of outstanding public service delivery.
  • Successfully demonstrated administrative and supervising experience in consolidating and managing a public and technical service unit.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of online systems.
  • Administrative, budgetary, and supervisory experience.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills, including the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and users.  Experience speaking publicly.
  • Knowledge of RLIN and OCLC required, and proven record of continuing education on new library standards.
